Paperwriting:

 

Purdue OWL resources for formatting MLA and APA style papers. Styles which are used throughout high school and college. From which fonts are acceptable to how to properly cite a source.

 

Easybib.com is another great guide for how to make citations in papers and has an automatic bibliography generator!  Just type in the name of the book or the ISBN, and it will make your works cited page for you! It works for MLA, APA, and Chicago styles and is FREE!

 

Grammar Girl's blog will show you the ins and outs of Standard English and punctuation without all of the pretentiousness and stuffiness. Auditory learner? Each entry comes as both a downloadable podcast and a text entry. So you can listen or read.

 

The Elements of Style by Strunk and White has taught generations how to communicate through the written word effectively since 1918.  No matter whether you are planning on being a doctor or a writer, proper grammar is a sign of someone who knows what he or she is doing.

 

Subject Specific Resources:

Wolfram Alpha can answer almost any question in almost any subject.  You can ask Wolfram Alpha questions about Carbon or who was the 16th president.  It can solve complicated math problems as well as tell you why the sky is blue.  Great for work or playful trivia.

 

Schoolhistory.org.uk is a British website designed for students and teachers.  It uses multimedia to simplify learning of historical events from The Black Death to WWII to The Iraqi War.  There is even a list of popular songs which address political events, issues and sentiments of the times.

 

Bartleby.com brings several works from the greatest authors from Western Literature to your computer screen for free! From Aeschylus to William Shakespeare to Virginia Woolf.

 

Project Gutenberg is a database containing thousands of books free books available for download to be read on your computer or ebook reader such as a Kindle or iPad.

 

College Prep and Applications:

The SAT's are a standardized test used by colleges to gauge how likely it would be for an applicant to succeed in their programs.  This link will show when the next opportunity to show off your know-how will be, and it is also where you can register to take the exam locally.

 

The ACT's are an alternative to the SAT's and also measure the likelihood of an applicant's success.  This site shows when the future test dates are as well as where you can take the exam in your area.  

 

"ACT vs. SAT" is an interesting article that illustrates statistics between the exams to help you decide which test is right for you.

 

AP Exams are a chance to gain college credit while still enrolled in high school.  Depending upon your score, this will allow you to get your degree sooner, saving you money on expensive university classes.  The College Board also has study questions from past exams to help you study (Hint: AP course teachers tend to use these as in-class or homework assignments).

Health and Fitness:

The YMCA really is a place you can go.  The Orange County YMCA has locations in Fullerton, Laguna Niguel, Mission Viejo, Newport, Santa Ana and Yorba Linda.  They have sports, camping, afterschool programs and more!

Suicide Helplines exist because we all experience personal crises which can seem unbeatable, but a caring voice and an empathetic ear can make all of the difference.  If you can't turn to family and friends, there are imperfect but kind strangers who are volunteering to help you, but you have to make the call.

 

National Eating Disorders.org has information on binge eating, anorexia, bulimia, and other eating disorders such as Orthorexia (the ironic condition of being harmfully obsessed with healthy eating).  There is information specifically designed for both men and women who suffer from eating disorders as well as a hotline for people to help toll free 1-800-931-2237 as well as a tool to help you find professionals in your area.
